イスラムの象徴的イメージ
日本でイスラム教はどんなイメージか？と問うと、布で顔や体を覆いつくした女性をイメージする人も少なくありません。イスラム教徒でない人にとって、それだけ「ヒジャブ」は象徴的なものです。
少し前までのヒジャブは、全身黒づくめのイメージもありましたが、最近では色も柄も豊富で、沢山のヒジャブがあり、その他の衣服に合わせてコーディネートするお洒落なイメージも増えてきました。
なぜヒジャブをかぶるのか？
イスラム教徒たちが忠実に守らなければならないクルアーンには、実ははっきりとしたヒジャブに関する定義は書かれておりません。
ですから、いつ・何故ヒジャブと呼ばれるようになったのかは分かりません。
ヒジャブの定義は書かれていませんが、クルアーンに、女性の服装について、このような記述があります。
“信者の女性達に言いいなさい。彼女らの視線を低くし，貞淑を守りなさい。外に表われるものの外は，彼女らの美（や飾り）を目立たせてはなりません。それからヴェールをその胸の上に垂れなさい。
自分の夫または父の外は、彼女の美（や飾り）を表わしてはならない。“
クルアーンには“美しいところを見せないように”とあるだけで、神（アッラー）は具体的に髪の毛をスカーフで覆うよう命じているわけではありませんが、この記述がヒジャブ着用として捉えられています。
日本でも「髪は女の命」という言葉がありますが、イスラム教では女性の髪は美しく
魅力的で男性を誘惑するものであり、隠しておくべき“美しいところ“（＝性的なもの）だとする考え方があります。
また、イスラム教において人間は弱い存在で誘惑に負けやすいものだとされているため、予め魅力的な部分を隠しておくことで女性が男性から性的な眼差しを向けられることや、男性が誘惑に負けて罪を犯してしまうことを妨げようとしているのです。
イスラム教において、女性は男性の前では慎み深く、そして身を隠すように定められているのです。
ヒジャブは何歳から被るのか？
幼い子供は基本的にヒジャブを被る必要はありません。
大体の女性は、生理周期の始まる13歳頃から被り始めます。 13歳以下であっても、基本的にヒジャブを被るのは自由なので、子供用のヒジャブを被っている女の子たちもいます。
