ジハードは日本語でしばしば「聖戦」と訳されます。
そのため、日本ではジハードの意味が誤解されがちです。
コーラン第22章「巡礼の章」の78節に、「アッラーの道の為に、限りを尽くし、奮闘努力しなさい」との言葉があることから、聖戦（ジハード）は「神の命令が完遂できないような環境が作られないように奮闘努力せよ」との意味だとされています。
大ジハード
個々人の心の中に生じる、悪い心（堕落や怠慢、腐敗など精神的なもの）との戦い。
善に生きようとする心を強くし、悪の心を押し込めること。
人間としての人格を高めるための戦い・努力のこと大ジハードといいます。
小ジハード
イスラム共同体に対する外部からの不当な干渉、軍事的圧力によって、崩壊の危機が迫った時に、イスラム共同体を守るために起こす闘争。
ただし、この闘争はあくまで防衛であり、攻撃的な戦いは、本来のジハードの意味とかけ離れています。
